A Clinical Study on anesthesia for Emergency Operation of 3,869 cases

Abstract
retrospective study was performed to evaluate anesthesia for 3,869 patients who received emergency operation at Korea University Anam Hospital from September 1991 to August 1995.
The anesthetic records of the patients were reviewed and analyzed according to the followings; incidence of emergency operation, age and sex distribution, ASA classification, distribution of department, types of opearion, anesthetic method and
agent,
usage of transfusion, admission to ICU and presence and site of trauma
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1) Total number of 31,816 operations took place during the period. Of them elaective cases were 27,947(87.8%) and emergency cases were 3,869(12.2%).
2) More than half of the patients were in the 21~40 years age group, consisting of 52.4% of the patients.
3) The ratio of male to female was 1.06 : 1
4) The majority of the patients were classified as ASA E-1,2 comprising of 86.95 of the patients
5) Cesarean section was the most frequently performed operation (19.7%) and appendectomy was the next(19.2%).
6) The most commonly used anesthetic method and agent was general anesthesia with enflurane. The number was 2, 284 cases(59.0%).
7) Transfusion was performed in 424(12,1%)cases.
8) The number of patients who were postoperatively transferred to intensive care unit was 409(10.6%).
